Perros Callejeros – Palm Springs Photo Festival
It is estimated that 80% of the world’s dogs are street dogs – feral animals that dwell among humans, but not as pets. These dogs sleep on the streets, eating our discards and charity, drinking rainwater, and live full, complex lives in a rich society that interweaves with our own. During the past few years, I have traveled to small towns and big cities in Oaxaca and the Yucatan, and have followed street dogs around for days in an effort to photograph, map out, and understand this life of theirs. In Mexico, these dogs are called callejeros.
In this selection are narrative arcs of the callejeros in the Centro district in Oaxaca.
